{"id":38488,"date":"2026-11-03T08:56:22","date_gmt":"2026-11-03T13:56:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nadeaubarlow.com\/?p=38488"},"modified":"2026-11-03T09:37:22","modified_gmt":"2026-11-03T14:37:22","slug":"the-globe-and-mail-opinion-the-protests-in-france-were-caused-in-part-by-an-app-heres-why-it-matters","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nadeaubarlow.com\/fr\/the-globe-and-mail-opinion-the-protests-in-france-were-caused-in-part-by-an-app-heres-why-it-matters\/","title":{"rendered":"The Globe and Mail Opinion: \u00ab\u00a0The protests in France were caused, in part, by an app. Here\u2019s why it matters.\u00a0\u00bb"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One source of student anger in France is a web application\u2014yes, you read right, students are protesting an app. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/opinion\/article-france-protests-students-app-parcoursup\/#vf-comments\">In this opinion piece in The Globe and Mai<\/a>l, Julie and Jean-Beno\u00eet explain what the app is and why students are demanding the government ditch it. \u201cThe protests in France were caused, in part, by an app. Here\u2019s why it matters.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As we explain, the app is called Parcoursup\u2014a contraction of\u00a0<em>parcours<\/em>, \u201cpath\u201d, and\u00a0<em>sup\u00e9rieur<\/em>, the French term for \u201chigher learning.\u201d It is a national, universal student-to-program matchmaking application the French government introduced in 2018 to tackle two problems in higher education: the system is decentralized (problematic in France), and it is extremely elitist.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The government&rsquo;s intentions were good. Although, theoretically, every high school graduate in France had the option of either of these post-secondary streams, in reality, we explain, there have always been huge barriers to both. The app aimed to make it easier for students from outside Paris to apply to some of the best schools in France.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But students have criticized it as \u00ab\u00a0discriminatory\u00a0\u00bb and demanded its removal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Will the French government reform Parcoursup, or even remove it to assuage escalating student anger?
