France\u2019s Ministry of Foreign Affairs<\/a> asked Jean-Beno\u00eet Nadeau<\/a>, co-author of The Story of French<\/em><\/a>, to tackle these questions at France\u2019s Estates-General on the\u00a0promotion of French abroad summit<\/a>, held in Paris this week.\u00a0 Nadeau will be squaring off with the Time\u2019s former European bureau chief Donald Morrison, who declared French culture dead in an infamous 2007 article \u201cIn Search of Lost Time.\u201d<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n

The Story of French<\/em> (St. Martin\u2019s Press, recently released in France as Le Fran\u00e7ais, quelle histoire!<\/em><\/a>) is a sweeping history of the French language as it\u2019s spoken across the planet. The award-winning work concludes on a positive note: Contrary to popular opinion, the number of French speakers in the world is increasing.<\/p>\n

Jean-Beno\u00eet Nadeau will be debating with Donald Morrison Wednesday October 19, at 1 pm.<\/p>\n

Jean-Beno\u00eet will also take part in a panel discussion La politique du fran\u00e7ais : quelles priorit\u00e9s, pour quels territoires ?<\/em> (The politics of French: what are the priorities and for what territories ?)<\/p>\n

Also participating in the panel discussion will be the author Louis-Jean Calvet (Emeritus Professor of the University of Provence), Mrs. Delphone Borione (MAEE director of cultural diplomacy and the French language) and Mr. Samir Marzouki (Director of Higher Education, Tunisia). The moderator will be Yvan Amar (RFI).<\/p>\n
